Pro Tips for Homeowners
For most NC homes, a heat pump is the most efficient choice — they heat and cool efficiently in our mild-to-moderate climate. For elevation 2,500ft+ or if you already have natural gas, a dual-fuel system (heat pump + gas backup) is worth considering.
Don't let a contractor skip the load calculation. Oversized heating systems short-cycle, wear out faster, and leave rooms cold because they can't run long enough to properly distribute heat.
Schedule replacement in late summer or early fall — before the heating season rush. You'll have more scheduling flexibility and time to choose the right equipment.
Ask about zoning if you have comfort issues between floors or rooms. A zoned system with multiple thermostats can solve hot/cold spots that a simple replacement won't fix.

Financing, Rebates & Tax Credits
Federal IRA Tax Credit — Heat Pumps: Air-source heat pumps meeting efficiency thresholds qualify for up to $2,000 in federal tax credits per year under the Inflation Reduction Act (2023–2032). This is one of the largest available home energy credits.
Federal IRA Tax Credit — Gas Furnaces: High-efficiency gas furnaces (AFUE ≥ 97%) qualify for up to $600 in federal tax credits.
Utility Rebates: Duke Energy Carolinas and Dominion NC Power both offer rebates for qualifying high-efficiency heating equipment. Ask us to identify applicable programs when we quote your project.
Flexible Financing: Monthly payment options are available. Spreading the cost over time makes upgrading to a more efficient, longer-lasting system more accessible.
Tax credit eligibility depends on equipment specifications and your individual tax situation. Consult a tax professional for details. Ask us about current utility rebate programs when you request your quote.

FAQ
Common Questions
Should I get a heat pump or a gas furnace?
For most NC homes below 2,500 ft elevation, a heat pump is the most efficient option — it heats and cools with a single system. For homes at higher elevation, with existing gas service, or in colder microclimates, a dual-fuel system (heat pump + gas backup) gives you efficiency in mild weather and reliable heat in extreme cold. We'll discuss your specific home and utility costs.
What's a dual-fuel system?
A dual-fuel system pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace as backup. The heat pump handles heating down to around 35–40°F efficiently. When outdoor temperatures drop below that threshold, the system automatically switches to gas heat. You get heat pump efficiency most of the time and gas reliability on the coldest nights.
How long does a heating system installation take?
Most residential heating installations take one full day — typically 6–10 hours depending on system type, access, and whether ductwork modifications are needed. We'll confirm the timeline when we schedule.
Do heat pumps work in very cold weather?
Modern heat pumps work efficiently down to the low 20s°F. Trane's XV series uses variable-speed technology that extracts heat from cold air more effectively than older single-stage units. For nights in single digits (which do happen in parts of Surry and Ashe County), we recommend including auxiliary heat strips or a gas backup.
Is there a federal tax credit for a new heating system?
Yes. Air-source heat pumps that meet efficiency requirements qualify for up to $2,000 in federal tax credits annually under the Inflation Reduction Act. High-efficiency gas furnaces (AFUE ≥ 97%) qualify for up to $600. These credits run through 2032. Ask us about qualifying Trane models when you request a quote.
Will a new heating system affect my home's value?
Yes — a new, high-efficiency heating system is a selling point, especially in NC where buyers are aware of HVAC age. A system with remaining warranty and documented maintenance history adds tangible value.
