Pro Tips for Homeowners
Bigger is not better with AC — an oversized system short-cycles, wearing out faster and failing to dehumidify properly. Insist on a Manual J load calculation before any equipment is selected.
Ask about SEER2 ratings. A SEER2 18 unit costs more upfront but can save $150–300/year vs. a minimum-efficiency unit in NC summers — paid back in 5–7 years.
Schedule AC replacement in the shoulder season (spring or fall) — you'll get better scheduling availability and avoid paying premium for rush installations.
Keep your old thermostat data. If you have a Nest or Ecobee that tracked usage, that data helps us size your new system correctly.

Financing, Rebates & Tax Credits
Federal IRA Tax Credit: High-efficiency central AC (SEER2 ≥ 16) may qualify for up to $600 in federal tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act (2023–2032). Ask about qualifying Trane models.
Upgrade to a Heat Pump: If you switch to an air-source heat pump, the credit increases to up to $2,000 — and you get efficient heating too.
Duke Energy & Dominion NC Power Rebates: Depending on your utility territory, rebates of $100–$400 may be available for qualifying high-efficiency installations. We'll help identify applicable programs.
Flexible Financing Options: Ask about monthly payment options when you request your quote. Spreading the cost of a more efficient system over time makes the investment easier to manage.
Tax credit eligibility depends on equipment specifications and your individual tax situation. Consult a tax professional for details. Ask us about current utility rebate programs when you request your quote.

FAQ
Common Questions
What size AC do I need?
We never guess. We perform a Manual J load calculation based on your home's square footage, insulation levels, window area, orientation, and local climate data. An oversized unit short-cycles and doesn't dehumidify properly. An undersized unit runs constantly and can't keep up on the hottest days.
Why do you recommend Trane?
Junior Collins HVAC is an Authorized Trane Dealer. Ask the team which equipment and warranty terms fit your home and budget.
What's the difference between SEER and SEER2?
SEER2 is the updated efficiency rating that replaced the old SEER standard in 2023. It uses a more accurate testing method that better reflects real-world conditions. The minimum for new AC installations in NC is SEER2 14.3. We recommend SEER2 16+ for meaningful energy savings over the life of the system.
How long does an installation take?
Most residential AC replacements (same location, same equipment type) take 4–8 hours for a single system. We'll confirm the timeline when we schedule and tell you exactly what to expect on installation day.
Should I replace my AC and furnace/air handler at the same time?
Often yes — especially if your air handler is close in age to the outdoor unit. Mismatched equipment reduces efficiency and can void warranty coverage. If the air handler is failing or inefficient, replacing both at once saves on labor and ensures the system operates as a matched pair.
Can I finance a new system?
Yes — ask about financing options when you request your quote. We can discuss flexible payment plans that work for your situation. High-efficiency equipment that qualifies for federal tax credits and utility rebates can significantly offset the upfront cost.
Is there a federal tax credit for a new AC?
Yes. High-efficiency central AC units (SEER2 ≥ 16) installed in 2023–2032 may qualify for up to a $600 federal tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act. Upgrading to a heat pump instead qualifies for up to $2,000. Consult your tax advisor to confirm eligibility.
