Pro Tips for Homeowners
A single-zone ductless system can be installed in 4–6 hours with minimal disruption. The only penetrations are a 3-inch hole through the wall for the refrigerant lines and a dedicated circuit from the electrical panel.
Ductless systems don't require a central unit — the outdoor unit can be mounted 50–100 feet away from the indoor head, making them practical for detached garages and outbuildings.
Indoor air handlers need 4–6 feet of clearance in front of the unit for proper airflow. Don't mount them directly above a door or in a corner where airflow will be obstructed.
Clean the washable filter on your mini-split air handler every 4–6 weeks — clogged filters reduce efficiency and can trigger error codes. This is a 2-minute task that makes a real difference.

FAQ
Common Questions
How efficient are ductless mini-split systems?
Ductless mini-splits are among the most efficient HVAC options available. Traditional ducted systems lose 25–30% of conditioned air through duct leakage. A ductless system delivers all conditioned air directly to the room at SEER2 ratings of 18–30+ on top-tier Mitsubishi Electric models.
Can one outdoor unit serve multiple rooms?
Yes. Multi-zone systems connect one outdoor unit to 2–5 indoor air handlers in different rooms. Each indoor head is controlled independently — one room can be cooling while another is heating, or simply off to save energy.
How long does a ductless installation take?
A single-zone installation typically takes 4–6 hours. Multi-zone systems take a full day or more depending on the number of indoor heads and routing complexity. We'll give you a specific timeline when we assess your project.
Can a ductless mini-split heat in cold weather?
Yes. Mitsubishi Electric Hyper-Heat systems (H2i series) are rated to heat efficiently down to -13°F. For NC's winters, even standard ductless systems handle the vast majority of heating days without backup. For spaces at higher elevations or with extreme cold exposure, we'll recommend the appropriate model.
Is a ductless system good for a workshop or garage?
Excellent for workshops and garages. They install without ductwork, tolerate the on-and-off use patterns of these spaces well, and can be set to maintain a minimum temperature in winter to protect equipment and stored items. A single-zone wall-mount unit is usually all that's needed for a standard garage or workshop.
Do ductless systems qualify for the federal tax credit?
Yes — qualifying ductless heat pump systems are eligible for up to $2,000 in federal tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. The system must meet minimum efficiency thresholds (SEER2 ≥ 16, HSPF2 ≥ 9). Most current Mitsubishi Electric and Trane ductless systems meet or exceed these levels.
