Heat Pump Repair

Accurate diagnosis. No guesswork. Fixed right the first time.

Heat pumps are complex systems โ€” they operate in both heating and cooling modes and have components that other HVAC systems don't. Junior Collins HVAC technicians are experienced in diagnosing heat pump-specific issues correctly, from defrost board failures to reversing valve problems.

Pro Tips for Homeowners

1

If your heat pump is running on EMERGENCY HEAT, switch it off โ€” it's a backup mode that runs only expensive electric resistance strips. Call us to find out why the main heat pump stopped working.

2

Ice on the outdoor unit in winter: a thin frost coating is normal. A solid block of ice indicates the defrost cycle has failed. Turn the system off and call us โ€” running a heavily iced outdoor unit can damage the compressor.

3

If you hear a loud click when your heat pump switches between heating and cooling, that's the reversing valve solenoid activating. One click per mode change is normal; rapid repeated clicking is not.

4

Check your filter if the system runs but doesn't heat or cool effectively โ€” a clogged filter restricts airflow so severely that the heat pump can't transfer heat properly regardless of whether its mechanical components are working.

Watch For These

Signs You May Need Heat Pump Repair

Don't wait until a full breakdown. If you notice any of these, give us a call.

Heat pump stuck in one mode โ€” only heating or only cooling
Not defrosting properly โ€” excessive ice accumulating on outdoor unit
Auxiliary heat strips running non-stop (very high electric bills)
System runs but output temperature is wrong for the mode
Tripping the circuit breaker on startup
Loud banging, grinding, or squealing from the outdoor unit
Indoor unit blowing air but outdoor unit not running

FAQ

Common Questions

Why is my heat pump always running in emergency heat?

Emergency heat bypasses the heat pump entirely and uses only the electric resistance strips โ€” much more expensive to operate. Waking up to an emergency heat light usually means the heat pump itself has failed and the system defaulted to backup. Call us to diagnose the underlying heat pump issue.

My heat pump is iced over โ€” is that normal?

A light frost coating on the outdoor coil in cold weather is completely normal. A solid block of ice is not. The defrost cycle should automatically clear frost every 30โ€“90 minutes. If it doesn't, there's a defrost control board, defrost sensor, or reversing valve problem. Turn the system off and call us.

What does a reversing valve do and how do I know if it's failing?

The reversing valve is what allows a heat pump to switch between heating and cooling โ€” it reverses refrigerant flow direction. A failing reversing valve most commonly causes the system to get stuck in one mode: all heat or all cool, regardless of what the thermostat calls for. Sometimes it fails partially, causing reduced heating or cooling output in one mode.

What's the most common heat pump repair?

Capacitors and contactors are the most frequently replaced components โ€” inexpensive and straightforward. Defrost board failures are very common in areas that see cold temperatures. Refrigerant leaks, reversing valve issues, and blower motor failures are less common but more involved repairs.

My heat pump runs but my electric bill is unusually high โ€” why?

The most common cause is the auxiliary heat strips running too frequently. This happens when the heat pump isn't performing efficiently โ€” usually due to low refrigerant, a defrost issue, or a failing compressor. The backup electric strips use 2โ€“3x more electricity than the heat pump itself.
